of export growth stalled in part because of sluggish shipments to asia, especially as china's economy was losing steam. the report concluded that the yen's up trend and declining stocks were making the environment around the economy increasingly challenging. japan's economic growth from april to june was revised up to 1.5% and that is an annual terms and over a percentage point higher than the initial estimate given in mid-august. the cabinet office said on friday that real gross domestic product grew 0.4% from the previous three months. this marks a third straight quarter of expansion. the revision is an upgrade from the preliminary report, but the pace of expansion was much slower than the 1.2% shown from january through march. one factor pushing up growth was increased company spending on plants and equipment which was higher than many forecasts. another was the slower pace in cutting inventories. a government official said the economy continues to show signs of recovery but expressed caution about the future due to a strong yen and also uncertainties overseas. >>> negotiators from

teacher is from. yes. >> yes. >> well there are similarities all of southeast asia. we performed in bali with a group. it's a story from the [inaudible] and so the indian epiics actually the indian epiics for very common in cambodia and bali and thailand and there is a different aesthetic. all southeast asia and asia there are a lot of similarities. >> he is a male entity. he is not -- are you referring to the story? >> it's interesting you should say that. a unique indian concept is one of half male, half female. and that is -- unlike some dances the solo dancer portrays all of the parts in the story. you can portray a feminine aspect and then masculine aspect with the bow and arrow. the male has to portray feminine and the female has to portray masculine. there is a very fierce dance and a soft sort of dance and every dancer has to learn all those aspects. it's very, you know, my teacher i call him a guru in this art form you have to study very, very hard. you have to learn about all the cultural aspects. he says it's liberating because he enjoys and has to learn to bring up the femi

schwarzenegger will be at the disaster zone this afternoon after coming back from his trade mission to asia. dispatchers have now released the chilling audiotapes that capture all of the day osand confusion of the frantic first moments of that disaster. and the first responders are now describing those terrifies moments. let's start our coverage with claudine wong, she has been talking with the ntsb about where this investigation is going. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, certainly the ntsb has a lot of work in front of it but they are finished with the pipe hire at the site. they are, however, not ready to leave yet because they still have a lot to do. they are headed this morning to a monitoring site in san francisco to talk to the employees there to look at records and to conduct interviews. this morning there is also a lot of talk about the add -- the valves the shut off valves that were near this 30 inch natural gas line pipe. pg&e says it took crews time to get two manual shut oofl valves -- to get them shut off. which was about a mile away from the explosion sight.

the result of growing exports of semiconductors and electronic parts to asia and automobiles to the u.s. meanwhile the income shrank by 17.7% to about $12 billion due mainly to lower interest rates. the ministry says that exports have slowed down since the spring and it will keep a close watch on the impact of the appreciating yen. >>> japan's machinery orders also rose in july up nearly 9% from the previous month. this marks the second straight month for an increase. the cabinet office said the total value of orders received by private sector firms in july stood about $9.1 billion up 8.8% in yen terms from june. the figure is regarded as a leading indicator for capital spending over the next few months. volatile orders for ships and power plants are excluded. by sector manufacturers saw a 10.1% increase while nonmanufacturers logged an 8.1% rise. the government maintained its assessment saying machinery orders are showing signs of recovery. >>> china remains noncommittal to a request from japan to review its decision to cut rare earth metal exports. a delegation from the japan/china

. the decision comes as more local carriers offer routes flying into japan from the asia pacific region. japan airlines plans to introduce a similar carrier. ana plans to unveil the airline by fiscal 2011. it will use a streamlined fleet with very reduced services to offer discounts. the new airline will be partly financed by an investment fund and operate under a different name. the carrier will be initially based at kunsai international airport in western japan but it will aim to expand its business to narita airport near tokyo. ana will officially announce the new airline on thursday. >>> japan's government is mulling new ways to promote eco-friendly car sales. on wednesday the ministry said it ended subsidies for the environmental friendly cars. buyers could get as much as $3,000 from the government. it unveiled the subsidies last year to bolster an economy struggling with the global financial crisis since 2008. the program received 453,000 applications and led to a surge in new car sales. now the government's facing more pressure to prevent those sales from falling. it also has raised dom

's some of the news received from broadcasting stations across asia. we begin with this item send from sri lanka. an explosion in eastern sri lanka on friday left at least 20 people dead including two chinese nationals. officials say the accident occurred when explosives being used by a chinese road construction firm blew up while they were being unloaded from a truck. the cause of the explosion is not yet known but police have ruled out the possibility of terrorist activity. >>> the olk nicers of the 2010 commonwealth games in new delhi introduced the games to the village, scheduled to officially open next week. it is spread over an area of about 160 acres. it houses a state of the arts training center and an international center and hostiles for about 10,000 athletes and officials. the training facilities include a swimming pool, track, gymnasium and weightlifting and wrestling areas. hello. they say that records are made to be broken and that's exactly what we're seeing in sumo. this man has won 52 straight bouts and he wants this victory to match the number two man in the record book k

latin america and asia. i never cut, more children are now learning to read and write. but there's still many children he did not regularly attend schools. especially in sub-saharan africa. in 1990, it was 43% of children. i in 2008, it had risen to 46%. but in south asia in 1990, 34% of children did not attend school. by 2008, that dropped to just 27%. the goal of universal primary education is far from being achieved, but education is seen as the key to effectively combating poverty. >> governments often view this type of investment as pointless social spending that will not be of any use to them. but this is really about economic development and stability. >> the third millenium ago, promoting gender equality and empowering women. the percentage of women who work is rising, if only in poorly paid and insecure jobs. the intent is also to have at least 30% of parliamentarians be women by 2015. that is occurring as well. in 2000 in developed countries, just 70% of parliamentarians were women. now it is 24%. there has also been an increase in developing countries from 11% in 2000 to 18% t

, companies may be forced to move facilities in japan to emerging economies in asia. >>> meanwhile, japanese importers are trying to take advantage of the strong yen. manufacturers are attending a trade fair in seoul to discuss the acquisition of cheap parts and materials from south korea. the japanese and south korean governments organized the two-day event, which started wednesday. 22 japanese firms are taking part in the fair. among them electronics and automakers. with the yen still riding high, they're hoping to save money on parts and materials. the currency's value has risen by about 10% against south korea's won in the past six months. more than 100 south korean companies are taking part in the fair. they want to increase exports to japan while the yen is high. >>> tokyo stocks fell just below the 9,500 level on thursday morning. the nikkei 225 ended the morning session at 9,494 points, down 0.7%, or 65 points almost. trading was mixed. some investors sold shares, taking their cue from overnight losses on wall street. but others bought, anticipating additional monetary easing by the
